Caffe Casta Diva - 4. Photos & 1. 16 Reviews - Italian - 2. S 2. 0th St, Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia, PA - Restaurant Reviews - Phone Number - Menu. S 2. 0th St. Apt 1. Philadelphia, PA1. Food and service were very good, even on a holiday. The focaccia bread is delicious, and the lamb entree was fantastic. Even though the restaurant is small, it is not too loud. Great atmosphere and food. Caffe Casta Diva was chosen by a friend for his group birthday dinner. This was my first visit and based on this experience I would add it to my little black book of Italian BYOBs. From a group dining standpoint, the service was spot on. Our server was efficient, professional and gave us that little extra time larger groups often need. He wasn't intrusive and there's nothing else more I could have asked of him. Being a BYOB is obviously a plus. As others have mentioned, it's a cash only establishment. I came prepared but others were able to run somewhere across the street to quickly get money at the end of the meal. The food was very good. Casta Diva USA is 10 directors, supported by 13 production offices, located throughout 10 different countries, all working in unison to provide solutions to agencies. Moved Permanently. The document has moved here. I feel I've become an Italian food snob and wasn't absolutely blown away. With that being said, it was prepared well and I really enjoyed it. It was solid and then some. The group split a bunch of appetizers including a cheese plate, calamari, salumi and fresh mozzarella. The crowd spoke! We cleared those plates. As my entrée I had the Gnocchi Bolognese. The gnocchi were light and fluffy and the Bolognese sauce had small, but sizeable pieces of meat. The light cheese added a nice touch. The prices were comparable of other nicer Italian BYOBs in Center City. I wouldn't hesitate to go back or recommend Casta Diva to others. Somehow, Caffe Casta Diva became my "neighborhood" go- to (it's a bit of a walk, but whenever I find myself looking for a casual but special dinner spot, I end up at Casta Diva). I can't put my finger on what it is exactly that I like so much - perhaps it's the combination of everything; the pasta dishes are inventive yet homey, the space is cozy, and the restaurant owner is earnest and involved. What first drew me to the place was the bucatini in avocado sauce with shrimp and red onions - who knew avocados made for such delicious pasta sauce! Since then, I've branched out and discovered other favorites, including the crispy whole branzino stuffed with minced vegetables, the tagliatelle with cinghiale ragu, and the calamari, sauteed in a rich tomato sauce. Cast Diva is a small space and quite popular, so I would definitely recommend reservations. Service is overall fairly good, though it sometimes can be slow. I do appreciate that they always say at the beginning of the meal that the restaurant is cash- only, so you're not left scrambling at the end. Sometimes the owner himself waits tables - and it's clear that he makes an effort to get to know his regulars. Casta Diva truly embodies that neighborhood BYOB charm that makes the Philly food scene so unique. Loving this quaint Italian restaurant just off of Rittenhouse Square! It's an intimidate little place that gave our group of 6 just the right amount of attention. I thought the pastas were prepared perfectly and seafood was fresh. It's an older clientele so the place is relatively quiet for being a BYO. The prices seemed reasonable relative to other Italian restaurants in the area. Cash only though so come prepared. Awesome little spot. Unique/inventive menu items make this an A for me. BYOB and BYOC (Cash no Credit Cards Excepted) Small intimate space with a New York East Village Vibe. The food is very good, perhaps a little too inventive. My New York Strip was very rare, seared on the outside with a rub that had some strange spice that wasn't to my liking. The steak was very good though. My wife had fish and loved it. She also loved the wine.. Service was great. The first time I came to Casta Diva I had a very good experience. Beyond how loud it gets when the room is full of people, the food was really great and I enjoyed eating there with my parents. I brought my parents back again after the last successful meal. Unfortunately, this meal was not a good one. The service was slow and we had to pour all of our own wine. Additionally the meals were not as good as I remembered. The biggest issue of the night was that my mother had ordered the branzino which the waiter didn't mention was the entire fish and the menu failed to mention that as well. My mother soldiered on when it came even with this surprise but as she began eating discovered that the fish was raw inside (still red) and mentioned it to the waiter who agreed. He took it back to cook some more? I thought she'd get a new fish, but alas they brought back the half- eaten fish which now has been actually cooked through. At the end of the meal there was no compensation or apology for this, which I found embarrassing. I called the restaurant after the meal to make a formal complaint regarding the incident and bring it to the attention of the manager if they hadn't been aware. The chef that night responded he was aware and was looking into it and that he would call us back the next day. Well, no call back, no apology. I wont be returning to Casta Diva and wanted to share this experience with my fellow Yelpers. Many better BYOB italian spots in Philly, I say skip Casta Diva. Before turning to the food and service, the big surprise here is when it comes to paying - they'll refuse your credit card, as they are cash only. I don't see that stated on their web site, didn't see it on their menu or posted in the restaurant itself. This is a fairly high end restaurant, so I didn't expect that. Diner for 2 could easily exceed $1. BYOB, so that's without drinks. Of course, I could have learned that by reading about them on Yelp, but this dinner was booked by friends who also recommended Casta Diva, so I didn't check them on Yelp. My friends also didn't know about the cash only policy.) The 3 star rating is a reflection this policy. The food and service were excellent. No complaints there. Duck and lamb dishes were described as excellent, and the branzino served with a piece of grilled fennel and shaved fennel on the side, was cooked perfectly. I strongly recommend the artichoke appetizer. The pear dessert was great. Our server in particular was very attentive and quite articulate in answering questions about the menu. Note also that the menu apparently varies from time to time, but the menu on the web site today is significantly different from the one in plastic laminate that they had in the restaurant last night. Our friends had stayed away from this restaurant because on prior visits, it was very loud, and some Yelpers have noted that. On this visit (7 PM reservation), however, the restaurant was mostly empty, and very quiet. So it depends. This restaurant has secured a spot on our must- return- to- BYOB list. The food was a little too salty and it was quite cold by the window in the winter, but everything we sampled has been very tasty and satisfying over several visits. Have been going to Caffe Casta Diva since it first opened and have always loved the food! Personal favorites: Trofie pasta dish, tiramisu and scrumptious foccacia. Wonderful, reliably excellent dining experience just off Rittenhouse Square. Just remember to bring cash, as they don't take credit cards. Great food at this intimate Italian BYOB in Philly. One of my favorite go- to restaurants to get a great meal with friends. Excellent meal. Cheese plate and beet salad for starters. Lamb chops, and boar ragout followed with poached pears. A gem, good food, service byob. You can't go wrong here. I love this place. Consistently a delicious meal and good service. The atmosphere is great for a romantic dinner or a fun night with friends. Their pasta dishes are great! I've walked by this unassuming facade on a regular basis, never making the connection that this was one I'd bookmarked based on the terrific reviews I'd read. Sure enough, they were true! We shared five dishes that ranged from alright to 'bring me ten more of those!!'. In the latter catagory was the calamari, unfried, enrobed in a sauce of capers and rich tomatoes and our pappardelle with a slow cooked boar ragu w mushrooms that I could happily have had thirds and fourths on! Sadly, the duck which is the dish I went for was definitively overcooked and in the former 'alright' catagory; still, can't wait to go back to this very cute, neighborhood byob. My meal was amazing! I ordered the calamari and I appreciated that it was prepared in an untraditional manner, not fried and by far more healthier! It was robust with flavor by the capers, and cooked in delicate oil. I also had the wild arugula salad which had a surprise for me, my favorite cheese, asiago! It was very light, balanced and refreshing! As my main course I ordered the gnocchi with ricotta. The sauce was with gorgonzola and it was so creamy and rich and the greens peas gave a lovely splash of color. Aesthetically pleasing. All the flavors of the cheeses were in perfect harmony. With each bite I died and went to heaven! But it was not over there. I mean how could l leave without trying my beloved tiramisu? And I am glad I did! We had a late reservation on a Saturday night for 4 people at 9: 0. PM. Another friend showed up to join us so we ended up having 5 people. The restaurant was VERY accommodating and gave us the larger table when another party did not show up. We were then seated and our glasses of wine were poured for us. For my starter I had the beet salad with the whipped goat & ricotta cheese and candied pistachios. The salad was very good (I still keep thinking about it - it was THAT good). For my entrée I had the pappardelle with wild boar ragu which was very good as well. I like how there were chunks of meat in the sauce and the pasta was cooked to perfection. My entree was also a good size portion. For dessert I had the tiramisu which was very yummy and light. Our waitress was very knowledgeable and the servers were great also. BLOOMING BUSINESS It's time to wake up and smell the imported roses. From the director. Extensive preparations went by before we went to Kenya to shoot “a BLOOMING BUSINESS.” Together with Eunice Muthoni (Kenyan Human Rights Watch) we travelled to Naivasha, one of the many areas that has grown significantly because of flower growing this past decade. Garden exhibittions are blooming -- with the green-fingered Royal Horticultural Society playing a key role. Everything is coming up roses for at least one sector of. Get this from a library! A blooming business. [Ton van Zantvoort; VPRO.; Newton Film.;] -- In this documentary by Ton van Zantvoort, the business of roses is explored. It was obvious that for many Kenyan people the rose meant something completely different than for most Dutch people. As Jane would say later on: “The rose means for me hard work, having thorns in my hands, with a lot of chemicals.” Jane, as many other workers, also had no clue what western people use these flowers for. She thought the roses are used for toilet refreshers. When I explained that, in western countries, many lovers buy each other flowers on, for example, Valentine’s day, she reacted surprised. In Kenya the women prefer money on Valentine’s day”. Getting accepted into the workers’ class and earning trust of many workers was a thing on its own. People do not dare to speak up, as the white Mzungu’s stand on the other side (the employers side). We met the head of the workers union. For a long time he was a flower farm employee as well and is now a well respected person among the workers. He knows many of them and their stories personally. We planned meetings at secret places where workers could tell their stories and experiences in confidence. We had interviews in groups and one on one, during which we heard stories of more than 3. Some farms were better than others, but the stories were even worse than I could have imagined. I was shocked and got emotional: I felt more urged to make this film and promised myself I had to continue this project, no matter what. Later on in the process, whenever I felt down or was wondering why the hell on earth I was doing this (as nobody asked me to) I remembered that moment, these people and my obligation to them to finish this film. Most issues that the people had to deal with, were not visible to the camera: corruption, sexual abuse, oppression and very bad working conditions. This was not easy, if not impossible, to film. It sure was a big challenge. ![]() Several employees told us that the companies are using many ways to avoid international rules. Women had to work while the men were spraying dangerous chemicals in the same area. Women were not allowed to wear protective gloves as they would damage the roses. As if that was not harmful enough, people had to work overtime without getting paid for it. I ran into all kinds of cunning diversions like these, fabricated by the employers. Eunice said: “Even our minister of Labour owns a flower farm, so if he improves the labour laws, he will also be affected.”There are good aspects to the farms as well: they provide many jobs, have their own hospitals and even provide houses for the employees. But here lies a cunning diversion yet again. Eunice said (and many (former) employees confirmed) that farm hospitals are the perfect way to cover up the chemically affected people. When results from testing for chemicals turns out positive, these people get fired immediately. So in all Naivasha there are very little reported cases of sick people due to spraying chemicals or any of that kind. The contradicting fact is that we met quite a lot of these (unknown) cases. The farms provide many jobs, which causes an oligopoly more or less. Eunice said: “There is a high rate of unemployment in this country. The growers take advantage of this. One sacked leads to more at the gate looking for a job. Even the houses, which are provided by the employers, are part of silencing employees.
A Blooming Business Case StudyFemale workers who are sexually harassed, will not easily, often not at all, report their cases, because they will not only lose their jobs, but also their houses, medical care and even schooling as well.” Too much is at stake if one would want to speak up about their problems at work. Many workers felt oppressed by their managers or supervisors. My naïve belief that the fair- trade flower would clear this all, appeared not to be completely true. From all the companies in Naivasha, only few have a fair trademark. Where do all the flowers that do not have trademarks go? Several employees confessed that there is a lot of outsourcing of very badly grown flowers to the few companies that have a trademark. That is how the farms without a trademark are still able to sell their flowers all over the globe. It was clear we were in the middle of a dark, mysterious and hazardous situation. I felt the anxiety every day I was there (and even after I returned home I have sleepless nights). Standing face- to- face with corruption is almost inevitable; it reaches into the highest position of society all the way down to the lower class. Therefore, there were only few people that we could trust. We tried to attract as little attention as possible, but Naivasha is not a real big place nor is it visited by a lot of tourists. Two white Mzungu’s with a camera and a boom microphone in a slum area like Karagita (where many workers try to obtain a house) attract quite some attention. To avoid getting noticed as much as possible, we often had to meet our characters outside of the farming and living areas. The actual filming was prepared well, which we tried to do as unobtrusively as possible. Three months after we left, I received news from Eunice. Apparently, we were not careful enough after all; one of Jane’s (farm worker) friends had sold her out. This was a female farm worker as well, who was even suggested as guide by the workers union. She wanted to have money from Jane, which Jane did not receive from us. As a result, Jane got fired by the company. Eunice said that according to her resign letter, she “had shared confidential company information with strangers.” With help of my brother we send money for Jane to get independent. ![]() Now, almost one and a half year later, I still did not see that resign letter and do not know for sure she even got fired, let alone for what reason she would be fired. Not everybody was afraid to speak up though. Many people were already fired by the blooming companies and really felt relieved that there was someone they could share their story with. We met Oscar, Kennedy and many other people who used to work at these farms. Even though these people were fired some time ago, they were still experiencing negative consequences from the farms. The water level of lake Naivasha has dropped enormously - as they say- to the mass water obstruction by the farms. A rose gets one and a half liter a day, according to the irrigating manager of the company that we filmed. After the film was finished I was told by the farm owner he should have said per m. Millions of roses grow in Naivasha. Fishermen also say that the breeding zones of the fish, is completely damaged because of this obstruction and also many fish die, because the chemicals that are used during spraying, in a lot of cases directly floods into the lake after it rains. Fisherman Kennedy catches less and less fish every year. When we were there he would only catch three fish a day, which he needed to share with his other two colleagues. He has a family of 5 to take care of. Oscar the water supplier also told us he experiences the damaging consequences daily. He makes a living of selling the chemically affected water to the society (mostly farm employees.) Furthermore, there are very few places where people can get access to the lake. The whole lake side is now surrounded by farms (and some hotels). For common people it is almost impossible to get access to the lake. Getting to know Oscar made also clear how complex the situation is in Naivasha (and probably a big part of Africa): he is a sincere, polite businessman, who did good on school, but unfortunately his father did not have the right connections for him to get the right job. He doesn’t have a choice than sell the polluted water to the community. Also people like our sincere taxi driver Peter, explained how frustrated he got by this and how impossible it is to achieve something in the world where corruption is dominating. Stijn and I spent many hours discussing and writing at our hotel to figure out how to tell this so enormous complex story. In the beginning, we would talk about it in the hotel’s restaurant, but that appeared to be the main gathering place for flower farm managers and supervisors. Eventually, we spent nights writing and discussing on our balcony. There are many more stories to tell, which I can not all tell. I started a BLOOMING BUSINESS as an artist and with a human interest point of view. Now a BLOOMING BUSINESS is finished I don’t know what will happen next. It is the first time I got into a situation like this, and to be honest I don’t think I want to get in something similar again. I am a film maker, not a journalist. I made a personal portrait about Naivasha and the people that I have met: their lives, their believes, their struggles, and their hopes and dreams. BLOOMING BUSINESS shows the complexity of existence of human kind in our new globalizing world. Let this film be the voice for those that do not have a voice. Let this film be a reason for institutions to investigate the fair trademarks. Because if I buy fair trade flowers, I expect them to be fairly grown. A clandestine operation is an intelligence or militaryoperation carried out in such a way that the operation goes unnoticed by the general population or specific 'enemy' forces. The United States. Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms (Joint Publication JP1- 0. January 2. 00. 7) defines "clandestine operation" as "An operation sponsored or conducted by governmental departments or agencies in such a way as to assure secrecy or concealment. A clandestine operation differs from a covert operation in that emphasis is placed on concealment of the operation rather than on concealment of the identity of the sponsor. In special operations, an activity may be both covert and clandestine and may focus equally on operational considerations and intelligence- related activities." (JP 3- 0. The bulk of clandestine operations are related to the gathering of intelligence, typically by both people (Clandestine HUMINT) and by hidden sensors. Clandestins Ou MigrantsClandestins Ils Traversent L\u0027enfer Pour Venir Vivre En FrancePlacement of underwater or land- based communications cable taps, cameras, microphones, traffic sensors, monitors such as sniffers, and similar systems require that the mission go undetected and unsuspected. Clandestine sensors may also be on unmanned underwater vehicles, reconnaissance (spy) satellites (such as Misty), low- observability unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), or unmanned detectors (as in Operation Igloo White and its successors), or hand- placed by clandestine human operations. The terms clandestine and covert are not synonymous. As noted in the definition (which has been used by the United States and NATO since World War II) in a covert operation the identity of the sponsor is concealed, while in a clandestine operation the operation itself is concealed. Put differently, clandestine means "hidden", where the aim is for the operation to not be noticed at all. Covert means "deniable", such that if the operation is noticed, it is not attributed to a group. The term stealth refers both to a broad set of tactics aimed at providing and preserving the element of surprise and reducing enemy resistance. It can also be used to describe a set of technologies (stealth technology) to aid in those tactics. While secrecy and stealthiness are often desired in clandestine and covert operations, the terms secret and stealthy are not used to formally describe types of missions. Some operations may have both clandestine and overt aspects, such as the use of concealed remote sensors or human observers to direct artillery attacks and airstrikes. The attack is obviously overt (coming under attack alerts the target that he has been located by the enemy), but the targeting component (the exact method that was used to locate targets) can remain clandestine. In World War II, targets found through cryptanalysis of radio communication were attacked only if there had been aerial reconnaissance in the area, or, in the case of the shootdown of Admiral. Isoroku Yamamoto, where the sighting could be attributed to the Coastwatchers. Le samedi 20 décembre dernier, un cargo chargé de clandestins est signalé aux garde-côtes italiens. During the Vietnam War, trucks attacked on the Ho Chi Minh trail were completely unaware of some sensors, such as the airborne Black Crow device that sensed their ignition. They could also have been spotted by a clandestine human patrol. Harassing and interdiction (H& I) or free- fire zone rules can also cause a target to be hit for purely random reasons. Until the 1. 97. 0s, clandestine operations were primarily political in nature, generally aimed at assisting groups or nations favored by the sponsor. Examples include U. S. intelligence involvement with German and Japanese war criminals after World War II. Today these operations are numerous and include technology- related clandestine operations.
